Cecil Shearin Buxton
Mrs. Cecil Shearin Buxton, 98, of Cary, and formerly of Roanoke Rapids, died Monday, October 6, 2008 at Oaks of Carolina in Raleigh.
She was born July 15, 1910 in Halifax County, the daughter of the late Hannibal Shearin and Pocahontas Harrison Shearin.
She attended East Carolina University in 1929 and was a member of the basketball and tennis teams. Mrs. Buxton was married to Russell Buxton, Jr. and they lived in Roanoke Rapids until his demise in 1993. Cecil was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Roanoke Rapids, NC for over 50 years. She led many Brunswick stew fundraisers for the Young Peoples Service League. She was also active in the Roanoke Rapids Boy Scouts and the High School Band Boosters.
Mrs. Buxton is survived by two sons, Russell Buxton III and his wife, Jo Ann, of Cary and Kenneth Shearin Buxton and his wife, Barbara, of Marietta, GA; four grandchildren, Elaine Buxton Barry and her husband, Robert, of Cary, Dr. Cynthia Page Buxton and her husband Rick, of Seattle, WA, Senior CPO Kenneth Shearin Buxton, Jr. and his wife, Kelley, of Sitka, AK, and Russell Buxton IV of Cary; four great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Nancy Waters and her husband, Cyril, of Littleton, Lattie Thomason and her husband, J. B., of Roanoke Rapids, and Jonnie Bell Clement and her husband, Lou, of Medford, NJ.
The family will receive friends Thursday, October 9, 2008 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Askew Funeral & Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids, which is handling the arrangements. Funeral services will be held Friday, October 10, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at All Saints Episcopal Church with Rev. Stephanie Allen officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.
